Saturday Salsa Fiesta - Monthly Salsa Party

  • Sat 25 Jul – Sun 26 Jul 2009
  • 8PM – 2AM

This month’s SSF is showcasing a brand new concept for Linear On1 Salsa enthusiasts –
the LINEAR STYLE SALSA RUEDA!!

For those Linear Salsa dancers who may never have done Cuban Salsa before and who aren’t familiar with the concept of the ‘Rueda’ – The term Rueda means ‘wheel’ and refers to everyone dancing Salsa in one big circle. A Caller calls out the steps to perform and everyone in the circle executes the same step, and then the guy passes the girl on to the next guy; thereby changing partners constantly. The Rueda is a whole lot of fun and gets EVERYONE involved; no matter what level or experience a person has. The Linear Style Salsa Rueda still operates in a giant circle and utilises all the same steps as the JRDA studio curriculum (ie Pepsi, Butterfly, Cross Body Lead etc).

So What’s NEW With the Linear Style Salsa Rueda?!

We’ve come up with some NEW fun variations!! –

  • Individual Shines! – Calls for doing ‘your own thing’ – your own shine with your partner before going back into the called steps
  • Group Shines! – Calls for everyone facing into the middle to ALL do the same shine together as a group!
  • Copy! A call for a ‘Simon Says’-like prompt to watch the Caller and do what s/he does! (Styling and step variations)
  • Freeze! A Call to apply the Freeze Ray!
  • Pose! “Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it!” Vogue it for the girls, Gangsta it for the boyz! lol

What Will The Class Cover?

  • The basic rules of the new Rueda and the Call names
  • Partner swapping variations of steps you already know
  • Sample Poses and Freezes
  • Sample Group Shines
  • Some cool new Individual Shines

Later in the night, we’ll be running a Rueda and you’ll be able to jump in confidently having already covered the basic rules in the lesson!!

The Linear Style Salsa Rueda will become a regular feature at SSF’s and at times used in classes. So come and be the FIRST ones to learn this great new fun way of sharing our Salsa together!!

Karl and the Deen Crew will be running the class from 8–9pm and you’ll need to get there on time to learn the basic rules of the Rueda in order to be able to take part – so don’t be late!

Tickets – $15 online here, at the studio or the Deen, or $20 at the door

Juan will be DJ’ing and this month’s music is dedicated to the late Tito Puente; the ‘King of the Timbales’! If you’re not familiar with Tito Puente’s work and influence on the Salsa world; check out the following:
